Philip Ratcliffe left Oxford University to start his life-long career in internal audit with Unilever, where he qualified as a chartered management accountant. He later became head of internal audit at a number of large multinational companies involved in manufacturing, distribution, and natural resources. He was then chief audit executive at a publicly quoted UK paper and packaging company. A long-term member and fellow of the Institute of Internal Auditors (in the United Kingdom, Brazil, and Belgium), Ratcliffe joined the UK council in 2006, serving as president for 2008–09.
