Definition of

affiliate program

E-Commerce

Internet advertising partnership between firms an advertising program in which one merchant induces others to place their banners and buttons on its website in return for a commission on purchases made by their customers.

There is no better example of the success of affiliate marketing than that of Amazon.com. The company has links on literally hundreds of thousands of external websites, linking through to its own site, from where it offers books and other products. It is a win-win situation: the external vendors can offer their visitors extra services that are easy to establish, and receive revenue from Amazon. At the same time, Amazon opens up a new channel for marketing each time a new visitor links through to its website.
