large morning purchase of firm's stock a sudden, planned purchase of a large amount of a company's stock at the beginning of a day's trading. Up to 15% of a company's stock can be bought in this way, and the purchaser must wait for seven days before buying more. A dawn raid may sometimes be the first step toward a takeover.
