US company investing in student loans the largest source of student loans and administrator of college savings plans in the United States. Created in 1972 as a government-sponsored entity, it became completely privatized in 2004 and is a stockholder-owned company traded on the New York Stock Exchange. Sallie Mae purchases loans from lenders, pools them, and sells them to investors.
